Supreme Court To Deliver Verdict On Remission To Convicts In Bilkis Bano Case

The Supreme Court is set to announce its verdict on Monday regarding petitions challenging the remission granted to 11 convicts involved in the gangrape of Bilkis Bano and the murder of seven of her family members during the 2002 Gujarat riots, PTI reported. The bench, comprising Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan, had reserved its judgement on October 12 last year after an extensive 11-day hearing on the petitions, including the one filed by Bilkis Bano herself.

During the hearing in September last year, the apex court had raised a crucial question about whether convicts have a fundamental right to seek remission. The court had directed both the Centre and the Gujarat government to submit the original records related to the remission of sentence by October 16.
