RBI MPC Meeting On June 6-8

The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee recently announced that they will maintain the repo rate at 6.50%, following a 250 bps increase since May of the last year. The State Bank of India anticipates that the repo rate will remain the same during the upcoming June 6-8 meeting. Furthermore, it was mentioned that there could be a potential downward revision in the inflation projections for the fiscal year 2024.

SBI has declared ahead of the MPC meeting that it foresees a certain outcome. It expects: “RBI to pause in June policy”. It stated that it believes that “at 6.50 per cent, we are in for a prolonged pause."

The report cited the statement of the Reserve Bank of India which indicated that the halt in interest rates was a momentary measure.

“With sizeable banking failures across AEs, and a fair probability of contagion spreading across markets despite concerted action from policy makers/regulators to check the same, RBI’s endeavor to sidestep from synchronous rate hike was a courageous gambit, especially since climate risk could upend inflationary projections,” said the SBI report.

“The stance could continue to be withdrawal of accommodation, as liquidity has turned into significant surplus mode,” it further added.
