Prime Minister Narendra Modi offers prayers at Orakandi Temple in Kashiani Upazila. The temple holds great significance as it is the abode of hundreds of Hindu Matua community, a large number of whom are residents of West Bengal.


Historians said the temple was raised in the 12th century at Orakandi, the birthplace of Hindu mystic figures and the Matua community's spiritual guru Harichand Thakur.


Matuas, who are a part of the namasudra community, have a significant presence in Bengal’s North 24-Parganas and Nadia districts. According to analysts, they can impact the outcome in 32-33 of the total 50 assembly seats (17 in Nadia and in 33 in North 24-Parganas) there.

PM Modi to offer prayers at Jeshoreshwari and Orkandi temples

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will kickstart the second day of his Bangladesh visit by offering prayers at Jeshoreshwari and Orkandi temples in southwestern Shatkhira and Gopalganj on Saturday. Prime Minister Modi, who had the jam-packed first-day of Bangladesh's visit, will fly off to Ishwaripur village today and offer puja at the Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple, which is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths, scattered across India and neighbouring countries.


He will also visit the 'Mausoleum of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman' in Tungipara of Gopalganj district.

For the first time in 160 days, India’s daily Covid-19 tally crossed 60,000 with Maharashtra, Punjab and Gujarat recording the most number of cases. The country also recorded 289 deaths from the virus in the last 24 hours, the highest daily toll since December 30. Maharashtra, which is in the midst of worst outbreak since the beginning of the pandemic in the country, reported another all-time high of 36,902 new cases on Friday, while Mumbai breached all previous records to registered 5,515 cases.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi began Day 2 of his visit to Bangladesh with a trip to the Shaktira Jeshoreshwari temple, around 300 kilometres from capital Dhaka. It has been redecorated specifically for the occasion. He is in the country to celebrate the golden jubilee of the nation's independence and the birth centenary of 'Bangabandhu' Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, its founder. As part of the two-day tour, he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for a one-to-one meet later in the day.
