SC To Deliver Its Verdict On Land Allotment For Lawyers' Chambers
The Supreme Court on Thursday is likely to pronounce its verdict on a request made by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) to convert 1.33 acres of land given to the apex court for the construction of lawyers' chambers, repoted PTI.
It is likely that the order will be issued by a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud.
The supreme court had stated that it would discuss the issue of the allocation of land for lawyers' chambers with the government when it reserved its order on March 17.
Justices S K Kaul and P S Narasimha were also on the bench, and they asked SCBA President Vikas Singh how a judicial order to take over the land for the allocation of chambers could be issued.
“Lawyers are part of us... But can we use our own judicial powers to safeguard our own people? It seems like the Supreme Court is exercising its own judicial powers to meet its own needs...
“We must trust the court to take it up on the administrative side with the government. A signal must not go to the government that we can bulldoze their authority by passing judicial orders,” the bench had said.
The CJI had stated that the government can bring the matter to the top court if it cooperates administratively.
However, the SCBA president had stated that the bar and other stakeholders would not participate in such administrative consultations.
Rahul Gandhi In Surat Court For Verdict In Defamation Case
According to party leaders on Wednesday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will appear before a court in the city of Surat in Gujarat on Thursday in order to face a verdict in a criminal defamation case that was brought against him in 2019 for his remarks about the "Modi surname."
In preparation for Gandhi's visit to the city, senior state Congress leaders, including GPCC president Jagdish Thakor, legislature party leader Amit Chavda, AICC in-charge of Gujarat Raghu Sharma, and MLAs, were in Surat.
The case was filed against Gandhi for his alleged “how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?” remarks on a complaint lodged by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi.
The alleged remarks were made by the Wayanad Lok Sabha MP at a rally in Kolar, Karnataka, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in 2019.
The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Varma had last week closed hearing final arguments from the two sides and set March 23 to articulate its judgment in the four-year-old defamation case, Gandhi's lawyer Kirit Panwala said.
