The apex court will hear appeal by Rahul Gandhi against the verdict by Gujarat High Court that dismissed his plea seeking a stay on his conviction in the "Modi surname" remark defamation case. The matter will be taken up by a bench of justices B R Gavai and P K MishraA bench headed by CJI D Y Chandrachud had on July 18 agreed to hear Gandhi's plea after senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi mentioned the matter and sought urgent hearing.
The apex court will also hear pleas by Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji and his wife Megala challenging the July 14 order of the Madras High Court by which it upheld his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices P S Narasimha and Manoj Misra took note of the submissions of senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the minister and his spouse, that the issue would become infructuous if not heard urgently.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi will visit Gwalior where she will address a public rally. Gwalior is the home turf of of Union minister and former Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Priyanka's visit to the poll-bound state will be a second one in 40 days. Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will be on a two-day visit to Assam and Tripura starting Friday to participate in an investiture ceremony for conferring Presidential Awards for Specially Distinguished Record of Service to officers and staff of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) in Guwahati. The Presidential Award of Appreciation Certificate, which was announced on this year's Republic Day, will be awarded to 29 officers and staff of CBIC.
