Uttarakhand: IAF Concludes Rescue Operations In Kedarnath Valley, 218 Pilgrims Evacuated From Gaurikund

The Indian Air Force has completed rescue operations in the Kedarnath valley, evacuating the final survivour from the landslide-affected region of Uttarakhand. A total of 218 people were rescued from Gaurikund, where a cloudburst triggered destructive landslides, leaving pilgrims stranded.

The AAP will hold a meeting on Sunday evening to discuss its plan for the next-year Delhi assembly elections, the party said. The meeting will be led by senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia, who was released from prison on bail on Friday, it said. The meeting will be held at Sisodia's residence. The former deputy chief minister got bail from the Supreme Court in corruption and money laundering cases linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam. The relief was given to him after the court noted that his long incarceration of 17 months without trial had deprived him of the right to speedy justice.

Asserting that the mega infra project in Great Nicobar Island is a grave threat to the natural ecosystem, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has urged Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav to suspend all clearances accorded to the project and called for its thorough and impartial review, including by the parliamentary committees concerned.


In a letter to Yadav, former environment minister Ramesh said the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change must fulfil its dharma, and not allow itself to be reduced to becoming a project proponent, especially when the project has decidedly disastrous human, social and ecological consequences.


"You may recall our recent exchange in the Rajya Sabha during Question Hour. The Union Government's proposed Rs. 72,000 crore 'Mega Infra Project' in Great Nicobar Island is a grave threat to Great Nicobar Island's tribal communities and natural ecosystem," Ramesh said.

Delhi: A 13-year-old body died due to electrocution at a Cricket ground in outer Delhi's Ranhola area. Police say that a PCR call around 1.30 pm was received followed by information from DDU Hospital that a 13-year-old boy was playing cricket on the Cricket Ground in Kotla Vihar Ph-2, when he got an electric shock from an iron pole carrying electric wire to a Gaushala situated in a corner of the said ground when he went to get the ball. He was immediately taken to DDU by PCR van where he was declared brought dead. FIR u/s 106(1) BNS has been registered and an investigation has been taken up.

Breaking News LIVE: Delhi-NCR Reels Under Waterlogging Amid Heavy Rain, IMD Issues 'Yellow Alert' For The Week

Rain lashed parts of the national capital on Saturday, sending the morning traffic out of gear and led to collection of water in many places. The Public Works Department said it received 20 complaints of waterlogging during the day, while the Municipal Corporation of Delhi received five complaints of similar nature as well as uprooting of trees   Delhi's maximum temperature on Saturday settled at 32.8 degree Celsius, one notch below the season's average. The minimum temperature settled at 25.8 degree Celsius in the morning, 1.2 notch below normal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Rainfall was witnessed in east Delhi, south, and western parts of the city. 


The IMD has issued a “yellow alert” for the week ahead from Wednesday to Friday, with forecasts suggesting cloudy skies and moderate rain to continue.

LIVE: Bangladeshi Man Posing As Indian Held At Lucknow Airport

A Bangladeshi citizen posing as an Indian was caught at the Lucknow airport while he was allegedly trying to fly to Thailand on a fake tourist visa, an official said on Saturday. The incident came to light Friday at the Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport when immigration officers questioned a traveller on the basis of suspicion,  the person said.


On Friday, the passengers of the flight (FD-147) going from Lucknow to Bangkok (Thailand) were being cleared at Terminal-3. Then a passenger Ashish Rai gave his passport and Aadhar card, Immigration officer Rakesh Kumar Yadav said. The address of Rathtala of Singur police station in Hooghly district of West Bengal was recorded on the document.

The Russian embassy on Saturday condoled the unfortunate instances of Indian casualties in the course of Moscow's special military operation in Ukraine and said recruitment of Indians into its armed forces was stopped since April.


In a statement, the embassy said Moscow and New Delhi are working in close coordination for early identification and discharge of Indian nationals who voluntarily joined contractual work in the military service and now want to return home. Since April this year, the ministry of defence of the Russian Federation has stopped recruiting citizens of a number of foreign countries, including India, into the military service, it said.


External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday said in Lok Sabha that a total of 69 Indian citizens are currently awaiting release from the Russian Army.

The Bengaluru Police have arrested a staffer of a coffee shop here for allegedly hiding a mobile phone in the dustbin of the women's restroom to record videos. The incident was reported on Saturday from BEL Road in Bengaluru. The accused staffer had kept his mobile phone in the dustbin to record videos in the toilet.


Sharing details, one of the customers present at the coffee shop posted on social media that she was at the coffee shop in Bengaluru on Friday morning when a woman found the phone in the restroom, hidden in the dustbin, with the video record on for about two hours, facing the toilet seat. It was on flight mode so that it makes no sound, and was carefully hidden in the dustbin bag which had a hole made in it so that only the camera is exposed. It was quickly found that the phone belonged to one of the men working there.

Breaking News LIVE: Former Foreign Minister Natwar Singh Passes Away at 93

Former External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh passed away on Saturday night after a prolonged illness, family sources said. He was 93. He breathed his last at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram near Delhi, where he had been admitted for the past couple of weeks, they said.


Singh was born in 1931 in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan. He was a career diplomat, who brought a wealth of experience in diplomacy to his political career and a prolific author on subjects ranging from the life of a maharaja to nuances of foreign affairs.

Search Ops To Resume In Landslides-Hit Wayanad On Sunday


The search operation to find those who are still missing following the devastating landslides that hit Wayanad district on July 30, will resume on Sunday. The search operations were put on hold on Friday afternoon as the area was handed over to the SPG in view of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit. 


PM Modi visited the disaster-hit Mundakkai and Chooralmala regions of the northern hilly district of Kerala.


Survivors of the landslides and kin of the victims would also be part of the search operations. "The state cabinet sub-committee on Saturday informed that the search operations will resume at 8 am on Sunday.The local representatives, volunteers and those in the camps, who wish to join the search operations, need to register before 9 am on Sunday," the government said in a release.


It also said the Army will comb the downstream area of the Chaliyar river on Sunday.


Earlier in the day, Modi assured that the Central government will do all the efforts in helping Kerala in relief and rehabilitation as he visited the landslides-hit Wayanad district. He described the tragedy as nature displaying its furious form.


IMD Issues Orange Alert For Kerala Districts On Sunday


After a brief respite, several places in Kerala received intermittent rains on Saturday with the India Meteorological Department predicting very heavy rainfall in several districts in the upcoming days.  


As per IMD's latest update, the northern districts of Palakkad and Malappuram have been placed under an Orange alert on Sunday.  


The Orange alert was issued in Pathanamthitta and Idukki for August 12 and for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, and Malappuram on August 13.


Meanwhile, the weather department also forecast heavy rainfall in Palakkad and Malappuram districts on Saturday and in Kozhikode, Idukki, and Wayanad districts on Sunday.  


In view of the heavy rainfall alert, authorities warned people to be cautious and directed those living in dilapidated houses to move to safer places.  


They also warned people to avoid crossing rivers and other water bodies or taking bath there in the wake of heavy rains.
