The group has been deactivated since it was exposed on Sunday creating outrage among users and parents. The teen who studies in one of the reputed schools in Delhi has identified around 20 more boys active in the group. His phone has been seized by Cyber Cell of Delhi Police for further investigation.
As per the initial investigations, the students belong to Class 11 and 12 from schools in south Delhi. The cyber-crime division of the police has asked Facebook-owned Instagram to share details on the group which is estimated to have almost 100 members.
According to online reports, the group has been active for some time and was full of images of underage women, many of whom had no idea that their images were being used.
After the complaint was filed by the girl when she found her images circulated in the chat room, Delhi Commission for Women has issued notices to Delhi Police and Instagram.
As Twitter and Instagram posts went viral some users identified the members of the group chat as their classmates.
Most of the conversations were centered on sexual assault often against their own classmates, in a casual manner only raising concerns about the normalizing of rape, misogyny and objectification in schools.
The screenshots of chats on this Instagram group were made public by some girls on social media platforms, including Twitter and Instagram. The incident has garnered a lot of outrage from social media users besides bringing into limelight the issue of safety with women.
