New Delhi: BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra has been admitted to a private hospital in Gurgaon after he showed symptoms of Covid-19, news agency PTI reported on Thursday citing sources.

Quoting hospital sources, it said that Patra, has been admitted to the Medanta hospital in Gurgaon. The BJP leader has shown symptoms of coronavirus it said.  Patra is the one of the most vocal spokesperson of the saffron party and represents the party in most of the media debates.

If the test reports confirm Covid-19 infection to Patra, he would be the fourth major political figures to have contracted the infection.

Last week Congress spokesperson Sanjay Jha had tested positive for Covid-19 and had self-quarantined himself.

On Monday,  Maharashtra PWD Minister Ashok Chavan tested Covid-19 positive. Chavan who has been frequently travelling between Mumbai and his home district in Marathawada, contracted the virus a few days ago and is said to be asymptomatic.

Earlier, the NCP leader and Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad also had tested positive for coronavirus. He made a full recovery after spending weeks in the hospital.

With 6,566 new cases and 194 new deaths India's total tally of COVID-19 reached 1,58,333 on Thursday, the Health Ministry data revealed. This is the second highest number of deaths reported in 24 hours, it was on May 5 when India had reported 195 deaths in a day.
