The Suzuki Jimny madness started when the car was first shown at the Auto Expo and then along with India, the rest of the world also went gaga once it was on sale in few countries. Hence it is not a surprise that there is a long waiting list for it in the markets where it is sold and people will not stop talking about it. Recently an image has also cropped up hinting that trial-production in India has been started.
So, to answer a question, is Jimny coming soon? No would be the answer and at the moment as far as we can tell, the car will take a long time to come! Well, the issue is that the Jimny is currently a 3-door and that is not practical for our market. Do remember Maruti burnt its hands with the Zen 3-door once (Zen Carbon/Steel) and these days it is a lot more about volumes which it would generate rather than just launching a car that promises hype but many would not buy for being too impractical.
Honestly, I would love to be proved wrong, if Maruti puts it for sale tomorrow, I would actually think of buying one. Part of the reason is that I have actually driven it and think it is a very fun car to drive. It is also compact along with being capable off-road while also looking cool doing so.

In all honestly, the 3-door would not make sense for India since it is tiny and for the price, it would command, the Jimny would not fit into the psyche of the Indian car buyer. A 5-door would be more palatable yet still retain most of the charm along with the ability to carry actual humans at the back. A 3-door Jimny would be too expensive hence Maruti has done the right thing by apparently waiting to get the 5-door though again, there is no confirmation.
Just like the Thar, the Jimny is a proper 4WD off-roader while also something which can be used every day. Regarding the off-road bit, it has a ladder frame and a part-time 4WD with low range transfer gear plus a 3-link rigid axle suspension.
The compact size also means that the Jimny would be an ability to go nearly anywhere while its approach angle of 37 degrees, ramp break-over angle of 28 degrees, and departure angle of 49 degrees further cements its hardcore off-roader status. In short, it is one of the most awaited cars and we do hope the mystery of when it is launching, is solved soon!
