Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh cabinet meeting chaired by CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy was held on Friday. The meeting lasted about two and a half hours and took several key decisions. The AP Cabinet approved renaming the Konaseema district as Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district and forming new revenue divisions and zones in the meeting. It also approved the setting up of the Adani Green Energy Project in the state at the cost of Rs 15,000 crore.


The Cabinet approved the release of funds for the Amma Vodi scheme. It also approved funds for welfare schemes Vidya Kanuka, Kapu Nestham, Jagananna Thodu and YSR Vahana Mitra.


CM Jagan approved the gazette notification issued on May 18 to rename the Konaseema district. Police have increased security across the district, especially district headquarters in Amalapuram, which witnessed mob violence on May 24 against the change of district name.


The state government, on May 18 issued a notification inviting objections and suggestions on the proposal to rename the Konaseema district as Dr Ambedkar Konaseema district. It sought suggestions and objections from the people residing within Konaseema. The 30 days to send objections and suggestions ended last week.


East Godavari was divided into the Konaseema district, which has Amalapuram as its administrative centre.


The government had named some of the districts after prominent personalities like freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju, former chief minister and TDP founder Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, who was popular as NTR.
