New Delhi: Veteran actress and Shabana Azmi’s mother Shaukat Azmi passed away on Friday (November 22) due to prolonged illness. She was 91. Shaukat, who took her last breathe at her Bandra home in Mumbai, is survived by her daughter Shabana and son Baba Azmi. The theatre personality was the wife of Urdu poet and film lyricist Kaifi Azmi.


A source close to the family told ABP News that Shaukat Azmi suffered a heart attack at 5pm and died on the spot. Shaukat passed away in the arms of her daughter Shabana, who was present by her side. Her last rites will be held on Saturday.

Shaukat Kaifi’s son-in-law and lyricist Javed Akhtar told PTI, ‘’She was admitted to Kokikaben Dhirubai Ambani hospital, for certain days she was in the ICU and then she was out of ICU. It was all age related. Ultimately they brought her home. She wanted to come back to her own room she stayed for a day or two and then passed away. Shabana is in Mumbai.”


Shaukat Azmi was known for her roles in Rekha starrer ‘Umrao Jaan’, Mira Nair’s ‘Salaam Bombay’ and ‘Bazaar’. She was last seen in Rani Mukerji and Vivek Oberoi's 'Saathiya'.


Shaukat Azmi and her husband Kaifi Azmi were associated with the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) and the Progressive Writers Association (IWA).  Shaukat wrote an autobiography titled 'Kaifi and I', which has been adapted to a play 'Kaifi aur Main'.
