New Delhi: World Students' Day is observed every year on October 15, to commemorate the birth anniversary of former President APJ Abdul Kalam. Though the United Nations is yet to declare October 15 as World Students' Day, it has been observed as such since 2010. He was a renowned scientist with DRDO and ISRO, and he was so dedicated that after ending his tenure as India's 11th President, he returned to his teaching career the very next day.

World Students' Day 2022: History

World Students' Day was first observed in 2010 when Kalam was 79 years old. The primary goal of this day is to recognise Kalam's contributions to education. His informative lectures and passion for teaching, motivated students to be the greatest versions of themselves.

Abdul Kalam has always felt that youngsters are the future and that they have the progressive brains that would propel our country to new heights of achievement in every sector. World Pupils Day was established to honour Abdul Kalam's devotion to his students.

World Students' Day 2022: A brief about APJ Abdul Kalam

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was born on October 15, 1931, to a Tamil Muslim family in Rameswaram. As a kid, he sold newspapers to supplement the family's little income.

He was interested in Mathematics and grew up studying physics and aeronautics. He oversaw the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program and along with it, the country developed the surface-to-surface missile Prithvi, the surface-to-air missile Trishul, and the anti-tank missile Nag, among other things. As a result of this, he was infamously called ‘The Missile Man of India’.

In 1990, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, and in 1997, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian accolade.

He has also written several books. Several of his works were best-sellers and are still read many years later. His best-selling works are Wings of Fire, Ignited Minds, India 2020, Turning Points, and Transcendence.

While giving a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong on July 27, 2015, the former president died unexpectedly at the age of 83 after collapsing from what seemed to be a heart attack.
