New Delhi: World First Aid Day is celebrated every year on the second Saturday of September. This year, World First Aid Day falls on September 10. It is celebrated to raise public awareness of how First Aid can save thousands of lives in everyday crisis.

World First Aid Day: History

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) established World First Aid Day in 2000.

Henry Dunant, a young Geneva trader, endured terrible suffering and torment on June 24, 1859, during the battle of Solferino. Nevertheless, the man helped build temporary hospitals and acquired the equipment and materials they required. His 1863 book- A Memory of Solferino served as the impetus for the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

According to the book, Dunant suggested establishing a separate group that would offer prompt assistance to soldiers who were injured. He is regarded as a co-founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which was established after his articles went viral.

World First Aid Day: Significance

A lot of animals and humans die every year sustaining injuries. They could easily be saved if proper first aid and medical care had been given to them at the right time.

First Aid often becomes the thin line between life and death when the patient is critical. Thus, everyone must have a basic understanding of first aid. Additionally, it's always an advantage to know what to do and when is a circumstance that needs medical assistance.

The goal of World First Aid Day, is to raise public awareness of the importance of first aid as a form of humanitarian empowerment and as a cornerstone of a more comprehensive resilience strategy. It is a chance to change how people view first aid and open up first aid education to the general public.

World First Aid Day: Celebrations in the year 2022

On the second Saturday in September, more than 100 Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies throughout the world hold events and ceremonies to educate the public on the value of first aid in both normal circumstances and emergency situations.

Everyone should have access to first aid, even the most vulnerable individuals, and it should be included in a larger development strategy.

The theme for World First Aid Day 2022 is 'Lifelong Frst Aid.'

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is dedicated to expanding its first aid programmes in accordance with Strategy 2030 to enable every National Society worldwide to prepare communities - with a high-quality approach - to meet disasters as well as regular hazards.
