Celebrated on June 3, ahead of World Environment Day, the United Nations has designated day the World Bicycle Day to promote the health benefits of cycling for all age groups besides other issues.
With most people confined within their homes and unable to join the gym owing to pandemic, cycling has emerged as an alternative exercise because of its health benefits. Regular moderate physical activity such as cycling helps to maintain cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, and flexibility. It improves joint mobility and helps decrease stress levels.
Why is World Bicycle Day observed?
The United Nations General Assembly recognised World Bicycle Day due to its versatility, uniqueness, and longevity of the two-wheeler. The bicycle contributes to cleaner air and less congestion and makes education, health care, and other social services more accessible to the most vulnerable populations
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), "safe infrastructure for walking and cycling is also a pathway for achieving greater health equity." Commuters who use their bicycles regularly agree that cycling saves time and frustrating traffic jams.
