New Delhi: According to Merriam-Webster, a silver-white hard malleable ductile metallic element capable of a high polish and resistance to corrosion is used chiefly in alloys, and as a catalyst, is Nickel.

This property of nickel of alloying with any metal makes it so versatile and enables one to work with it so easily. Nickel has a long list of its usage, it is being used in almost everything from the manufacturing jwelleries to various kinds of turbines, it is being used everywhere.

As per a website called, Juliet and Oliver, the presence of Nickel in ornaments does not suit everybody, and to be precise, nickel is not a good option when it comes to pick jewelleries. Here are the following reasons that advocate the fact that one should always opt for nickel-free jewelleries:

Exposure To Nickel-Based Jewelleries Can Cause Several Health-Based Problems:

In our daily lives, we are always exposed to nickel, the dishes that we use for cooking, the water that we consume, and those who smoke or are in contact with anyone who smokes, in all situations we are exposed to Nickel. Unlimited exposure to Nickel is likely to cause skin infections and rashes, another possibility of this exposure can be cancer as well.

What Are The Symptoms Of Nickel-Based Allergy?

According to the Mayo Clinic, the symptoms of nickel-based allergies involve rashes, bumps, and itching on the skin exposed to metal. Redness and change of colour of the skin can also be a symptom of this allergy.

What does hypoallergenic mean?

According to the Oxford Languages, the term hypoallergenic is usually used in the context of metals and jewelleries, it means something that is unlikely to cause an allergy.

How To Deal With Nickel-Based Reactions?

"If one has a nickel allergy, he/she already knows how tedious it can be to look for the ideal earrings, necklaces, bracelets, or rings," says the Jewellery Industry Expert, Ms Chinu Kala, Rubans Accessories. The industry expert has has further elaborated on some preventive measures that can help one to avoid nickel allergies;

Avoid Nickel: The best prevention against nickel-based allergies is to break the exposure cycle of the skin with nickel-based ornaments or objects.

Opt for Hypoallergic Jewelleries: Avoid wearing nickel-containing jewellery. Buy jewellery produced from non-allergenic materials to avoid allergic reactions. Look for jewellery manufactured from materials like 18-karat yellow gold, titanium, surgical-grade stainless steel, nickel-free stainless steel, and sterling silver.

Look For Alternatives: Jewellery made up of metal other than nickel, such as stainless steel, surgical grade stainless steel, titanium, gold and sterling silver can be better alternatives for nickel.

Prevention is better than cure, but if something has already happened and is getting serious with every moment passing, it is always suggested to visit the nearest available doctor for consultation.

Nickel Test Kit: To detect the presence of nickle in a piece of Jewellery can be done with help of a Nickel Test Kit, easily available on the market. This test kit contains a chemical called dimethylglyoxime. The jewellery item is not harmed by the usage of this chemical. When a cotton swab is used to apply the solution to a metal object, the colour will change to pink if nickel is present.
