Today is observed as the Bengali New Year, which is popular as Poila Boishakh or Bangla Noboborsho. In Bengali, the word Poila means ‘first’ and Baisakh is the first month of the Bengali Calendar, hence together the festival is called Poila Boishakh.


According to the lunisolar Bengali calendar, the festival usually falls in the second week of April every year, this year it is celebrated on April 15. The Bengali community across the world celebrates this day with enthusiasm and fervour.

On the new year, Bengalis indulge in feasting everything starting from fish, seafood, and mutton to vegetables and sweets cooked in traditional style. People exchange new year greetings with friends and family besides cleaning houses and decorating alpanas.


It is also the beginning of the financial year and people also offer prayers to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi on this day. On the new year, people wear new clothes and also gift each other clothes.


On this day, businessmen inaugurate the 'Haalkhata' or new accounts register since it is considered to be the auspicious day to begin new ventures. People clear old debts 1and loans in the previous months to usher in the new year.
