New Delhi: The 2023 Met Gala will take place on Monday, May 1, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City. This year’s Costume Institute exhibition, 'Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty', will celebrate the full work and life of Karl Lagerfeld. Lagerfeld created designs for numerous fashion labels, including his own label, Patou, Balmain, Chloé, Fendi, and Chanel, so attendees will have plenty of options to choose from. But before this year's show, let's know a brief about what Met Gala is.

What Is Met Gala:

The Met Ball, often referred to as the Costume Institute Gala or the Costume Institute Benefit, is a fundraiser organised by Anna Wintour in Manhattan, New York City, to benefit the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is the most prominent fashion event in the world and is also the most eagerly anticipated one. Only A-List celebrities, those deemed to have the most impact in the entertainment industry, business, sports, journalism, and politics, are invited to the spectacular event.

Origin Of Met Gala:

The Met Gala was started in 1948 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert to raise money for the Costume Institute, which had just been established at the time. Then onwards, it is held annually on the first Monday in May, which also marks the opening of the museum's Anna Wintour Costume Institute annual exhibition.

Presently, it is NYC's largest charity event. The Meta Gala raised $9 million in 2013, $12 million in 2014, and $17.4 million by 2022, breaking all previous records. Additionally, in 2019, donations reached $200 million in total.

Themes At Met Gala:

Each year, a certain theme is designated for the exhibit, which visitors are encouraged to adhere to but are not required to do. There will be a formal dinner as well as a cocktail hour. Guests arrive during the cocktail hour to walk the red carpet, view the year's themed special exhibition, and be seated before the dinner party, which features entertainment from the top performers of the time. The theme not only establishes the mood for the annual show but also for the visitors who try to dress accordingly, frequently sparking runs on certain fashion trends among the top fashion merchants in the globe.

Met Gala 2023: Theme

The dress code for the 2023 Met Gala is 'in honour of Karl'. The exhibition will feature an analysis of Karl Lagerfeld's (1933–2019) work by Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator in Charge at the Costume Institute. Additionally, it will feature more than 150 pieces, many of which will be accompanied with sketches by Lagerfeld.
