The Story Of Magh Bihu:

Rooted in agricultural traditions, Magh Bihu is of ancient origin. Historically, farmers expressed their gratitude for a bountiful harvest and offered sacrifices to the Gods. The Dimasa Kacharis tribe is known to be the forst people to celebrate this festival. Over a period of time, this practice evolved into a lively festival celebrating the abundance harvested from the fields.

Rituals That Define Magh Bihu:

Magh Bihu spans two days, with the initial day being referred to as Uruka or Bihu eve. On this occasion, young men venture into the fields to construct temporary cottages, known as 'Bhelaghar,' preferably situated near the river. These cottages are crafted using hay brought from the harvested fields. Additionally, a Meiji (bonfire) is erected, and on the evening of Uruka, it is lit amidst the backdrop of people singing Bihu songs, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of Dhol.

The main Magh Bihu festivities take place on the subsequent day.

In the early morning of Magh Bihu, individuals perform a cleansing bath and engage in traditional Assamese games such as Tekeli Bonga (pot-breaking) and buffalo fighting. Other activities include cock fights and egg fights. As a gesture of goodwill, people share rice cakes with their friends, relatives, and neighbors. Additionally, the production of Laru, a sweet delicacy made from coconut, is also prepared.

The Significance Of The Rich Culture Of Magh Bihu:

Magh Bihu emerges as a significant period showcasing the rich culture, traditional music and dance forms of Assam. In addition, it is a collective celebration of agricultural prosperity, bringing together families and friends. This festival signifies the culmination of one agricultural cycle and marks the commencement of the Assamese New Year, fostering a sense of renewal and optimism within the community.
