History Of International Day Of Yoga

The International Day of Yoga, declared by the United Nations in 2014, emphasizes the global recognition of yoga and its wide-ranging benefits. The word "yoga," derived from Sanskrit, represents the union of body and consciousness, embodying the core principles of this ancient practice.

On December 11, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution, proposed by India and endorsed by a record-breaking 175 member states, designating June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. Prime Minister Narendra Modi played a crucial role in suggesting this date during his address at the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly. He emphasized the significance of June 21, the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, as it marks the longest day of the year and holds special meaning in various parts of the world.

Since its establishment, the International Day of Yoga has been observed annually on June 21, serving as a platform to raise global awareness about the multitude of advantages that yoga offers. The primary objective is to promote yoga's holistic approach to health and well-being.

The upcoming yoga session at Purana Qila, led by Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi, aims to underscore the profound connection between yoga and India's cultural heritage. The event intends to inspire participants to embrace yoga and its transformative effects on their daily lives.
