New Delhi: PM Modi attended a mass yoga session at the UN headquarters lawns, on the occasion of International Yoga Day, and created a new Guinness world record. There were135 nationalities participating in the session and the PM was careful to choose asanas and pranayama related to lifestyle management and course correction among 24X7 professionals. Apart from the asanas, the thing that caught the eye was the Assamese 'Gamusa' that he was wearing around his neck.
On his way to the US, PM Modi shared a picture on Twitter, where he can be seen in a traditional Kurta-Pajama along with the Gamusa around his neck. He wrote, "A long flight also means opportunities to go through papers and some file work."
Piyush Hazarika, Minister of Water Resources, Parliamentary Information, Public Relations, Printing & Stationery, Govt. of Assam, thanked the Prime Minister for his continued affection for Assam and shared a message on social media.
"It is so heartening, and a matter of such great pride, to see Adarniya Pradhan Mantri Sri Narendra Modi ji donning a Gamusa again, which is the icon of Assamese culture and heritage. We thank Hon PM for his continued affection for Assam.", he wrote.
All About The Gamusa:
The Assamese Gamusa is a handwoven cotton textile from Assam. It is usually white in colour with crimson or maroon stripes on the edges and may include ornate motifs woven into it. Being a versatile piece of cloth, it plays a vital role in Assamese culture and is worn on a variety of social, cultural, and religious activities.
Additionally, the Gamusa also represents hospitality, kindness, and respect and is also given as a gift to guests or used to honour significant people.
In recent years, the Gamusa, also known as Gamucha, has gained popularity outside of Assam and is now recognised as a symbol of India's whole northeast area.
