New Delhi: International Women's Day is celebrated worldwide on March 8, and it is a day to honour the advancements made in gender equality and women's rights as well as to draw attention to the ongoing difficulties and barriers that women experience around the world. The day also raises awareness of the feminist movement, gender equality concerns, rights to abortion, accomplishments of women in various disciplines, and violence and abuse directed at women.

International Women's Day 2023: History

The Socialist Party of America established National Women's Day in New York on February 28, 1909. This was suggested by Theresa Malkiel, a labour activist, as a way to remember the city-wide demonstrations against garment workers. Later, German delegates advocated this taking inspiration from American socialists.

Again, women's rights advocate Clara Zetkin proposed an international women's day the following year at the second International Congress of Working Women in Copenhagen, Denmark, to give women a stronger voice to advance their demands for equal rights.

The inaugural celebration of International Women's Day took place in March 1911, and in 1913 the date was set as March 8. In support of women's rights and global harmony, the UN General Assembly declared March 8 as International Women's Day in 1977. The United Nations first marked International Women's Day in 1975. Since that time, the UN has recognised the day by selecting a theme each year.
