Holi, the festival of colours, is a celebration of happiness, bonding, and colourful festivities. But in the midst of all the fun, it is important to take care of the effects of synthetic colours on our skin. Most Holi colours sold commercially have toxic chemicals such as lead, mercury, and artificial dyes that cause skin allergies, rashes, and even long-term skin problems.

Common Skin Issues During Holi
- Skin Irritation & Redness: Harsh chemicals in artificial colours have the effect of causing instant irritation and redness on sensitive skin.
- Itching & Rashes: Overexposure to artificial dyes may result in constant itching and rashes.
- Breakouts & Acne: Individuals with oily or acne skin may suffer from breakouts caused by clogged pores from colour particles.
- Dryness & Flakiness: Chemical-loaded dyes remove the natural oils from the skin, causing extreme dryness and flaking.
- Allergic Dermatitis: Individuals with existing skin diseases such as eczema or psoriasis can have severe allergic responses.
- Inflammation & Burning Sensation: Some synthetic dyes produce a burning sensation or inflammation, particularly on sensitive skin areas such as the face and neck.
How to Protect Your Skin
- Opt Organic colours: Use natural, herbal, or homemade dyes from turmeric, beetroot, henna, and flowers. They are skin and environment friendly.
- Use a Protective Layer: Put a good layer of coconut or olive oil on your skin before going out. This forms a protective layer, and it will be easy to remove colours afterward.
- Wear Full-Sleeve Clothes: Covering arms and legs limits direct skin exposure to harmful chemicals.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink lots of water to keep your skin well-hydrated and less susceptible to dryness or irritation.
- Use Sunscreen: A broad-spectrum sunscreen guards against UV rays and colour-induced tanning and damage.
- Cleanse Gently: When washing off colours after playing, use lukewarm water and soap. Don't scrub hard, as this can cause more irritation.
- Moisturise Well: After cleaning, moisturise with a calming moisturiser or aloe vera gel to regenerate skin hydration.
By following these precautions, you can have a fun and skin-friendly Holi without sacrificing fun. Celebrate safely and maintain healthy skin!
