New Delhi: It’s that time of the year when communities across the country ring in their traditional new year. The first day of the Malayalam month of Medam is celebrated as Vishu, according to the lunar calendar of Hindus.
The Sankranthi moment on Vishu started at 8:56 am on 14 April, according to Drikpanchang.

What’s the significance of Vishu?
Vishu marks the onset of spring and harvest season in the region. The day also marks the triumph of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura. On this day, Lord Vishnu and his avatar Krishna are worshipped, and families prepare a variety of delicacies known as Sadya.
People wake up to see the Vishu kani where 'Kani' means "the first thing you see in the morning on Vishu". The belief is that one should get up to look at auspicious things on Vishu because people are then expected to experience the best throughout the year.
The celebrations remained muted for consecutive two years in a row due to pandemic. However, this year is different with pandemic slowing down in India and people are prepping up for celebrations.
Tamilians, Malayalis, Odias, and Assamese will also ring in Puthandu, Vishu, Pana Sankranti, and Bohag Bihu.
Ugadi, Gudi Padwa, Vaisakhi, and Navreh were celebrated on April 2 by Telugus, Kannadigas, Maharashtrians, Sikhs, and Kashmiris respectively. Bengalis celebrate their new year known as ‘Pohela Baisakh’.
