The tradition of celebrating January 1 as the start of a new year dates back to 45 BCE. Before this, the Roman calendar consisted of 355 days and began in March. When Julius Caesar became the dictator of Rome, his new calendar had January as the first day of the year as a tribute to Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and transitions.
As part of the growing European occupation of both America and Asia, Christianity was found as a life-giving force. The recognition of December 25 and the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ were at first negated, so January 1 continued to be a day of nonbelievers. However, it was a later Pope Gregory who put January 1 back on the calendar as the date for most people to consider as their New Year's Day.
