Maha Shivratri, one of the most important Hindu festival, celebrated with great pomp and devotion across the country, is on March 11. On this day, married and unmarried women observe fast for a happy married life and to please Lord Shiva by offering him milk and fruits.
As per Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati and thus this day is celebrated as Maha Shivratri. Shiv means Lord Shiva and ratri means night, so, Maha Shiratri is said to be the great night of Lord Shiva. The festival is celebrated on Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Phalguna.
On this day, devotees of Lord Shiva (both men and women) observe day long fast and stay up all night chanting Shiv mantras and bhajas. They also take a dip in the holy Ganga river and thousands of devotees visit Shiva temples.

This year, Maha Shivratri is being celebrated on March 11, which is a Thursday. The chaturdashi tithi begins at 02.39 pm on March 11, and ends 03.02 pm on March 12.
According Drik Panchang, a day before Maha Shivratri, devotees eat only one time and on the day, they observe a full-day fast which means they cannot eat anything until the next day.
