New Delhi: Daughters' Day or International Daughters' Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of September, so this year it falls on September 25 while other countries may celebrate it on different days. The day is observed to appreciate the importance of having a daughter and affirm that they are not inferior to sons.

In a patriarchal world, there is a societal preference for sons over daughters, while it is slowly fading over time, it is still very prevalent.

The day doesn't have a concrete origin, however, it started as a day to honour women and daughters in a patriarchal society, which considered them as a liability. Daughters' Day reminds to help fight the stigma and tackle crimes against the girl child. 

On Daughters' Day, parents surprise their daughters with gifts, handmade cards, preparation of their favourite dishes, and quality time together like going to the movies or a restaurant.
