Dussehra 2023 Celebrations Highlights: Welcome to ABP Live's coverage of Vijayadashami festivities. Stay tuned to this live blog for real-time updates on the nationwide celebrations of this auspicious festival.
The country is immersed in the festive spirit of Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, Dasara, or Dashain, a significant day that symbolizes the victory of good over evil. This occasion commemorates the defeat of the demon king Ravana by Lord Rama and the triumph of Maa Durga over Mahishasura. Falling on the tenth day of the Ashwin month, it is the concluding day of the nine-day Navratri festival, celebrated with fervor and grandeur.
The terminology used to describe this festival varies across different regions of India. While "Dussehra" is more commonly used in North Indian states and Karnataka, "Vijayadashami" holds sway in West Bengal, where the occasion is marked by the immersion of Maa Durga idols in holy water bodies. Across the nation, the festivities are characterized by the enactment of Ram Lila, grand-scale fairs, and the burning of effigies of Ravana, drawing large crowds to witness the spectacle.
Dussehra or Vijayadashami is observed on October 24 this year, with the auspicious Vijaya Muhurat beginning at 1:58 pm and concluding at 2:43 pm, according to Drik Panchang. The afternoon Puja time is scheduled from 1:13 pm to 3:28 pm. The Dashami Tithi commences on October 23 at 5:44 pm and concludes on October 24 at 3:14 pm. The Shravana Nakshatra falls between October 22 at 6:44 pm and October 23 at 5:14 pm.
This festival falls on Shukla Paksha Dashmi during the Ashwin month of the Hindu lunar calendar, coinciding with the culmination of Shardiya Navratri. Vijayadashami signifies the victory of righteousness over malevolence, as per Hindu legends, with Lord Rama's defeat of the demon king Ravana and Maa Durga's conquest of Mahishasura after a fierce nine-day battle.
Dussehra not only marks a day of festivity but also serves as the precursor to Diwali celebrations, coming twenty days before the festival of lights. It symbolises the homecoming of Lord Rama, Maa Sita, and Lord Lakshman and imparts the profound message of the supremacy of good over evil and light over darkness. People observe this day with prayers for prosperity and good health. Additionally, the worship of the Shami tree on Vijayadashami holds great significance in certain regions, as it is believed that Arjun concealed his weapons within the Shami tree during his exile.
In various parts of North India and other regions, Dussehra is celebrated by igniting effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhkaran, and the valiant warrior son of Ravana, Meghnad. Ramlila, the enactment of Lord Rama's saga, spans all nine days of Navratri and culminates with the effigy-burning ceremony on the tenth day. The symbolism of Dussehra also extends to ridding oneself of sins or negative qualities, with the ten heads of Ravana representing these undesirable traits.
