Detoxification is a holistic and inclusive strategy geared towards body, mind, and spirit cleansing. One of the ways to detoxify your body is Ayurveda which relies on ancient fundamentals that help restore balance and eliminate toxins from the body. One can identify the predominant dosha or doshas—Vata, Pitta, or Kapha—the first step in detoxification. Addressing specific imbalances related to doshas helps tailor the detox plan.

Dr. Mohit Agarwal, who is the Co-founder,Healthmug said, "Detoxifying the body through Ayurveda is a natural and holistic approach to removing toxins (ama) and restoring balance."

He also went on to list some ways to detoxify your body with Ayurveda:

1. Eat a Balanced Diet: Ayurveda places a strong emphasis on diet for detoxification. Focus on whole, fresh, and seasonal foods. Favour organic and locally sourced ingredients. A diet that aligns with your dosha can help balance your body. Vata individuals should opt for warm, grounding foods like cooked grains, root vegetables, and nourishing soups. Pitta individuals benefit from cooling foods like cucumbers, leafy greens, and sweet fruits. Kapha individuals should choose lighter, spicy, and warm foods to stimulate digestion.

2. Practice Regular Fasting: Intermittent fasting or periodic fasting can be beneficial for detoxification. Fasting gives your digestive system a break and allows the body to focus on eliminating accumulated toxins. However, consult an Ayurvedic practitioner before starting a fasting regimen, as it should be tailored to your dosha.

3. Herbal Support: Ayurvedic herbs are commonly used for detoxification. Triphala, a combination of three fruits (amalaki, haritaki, and bibhitaki), is a powerful detoxifying agent that promotes healthy digestion and elimination. Other herbs like neem, turmeric, and guggul also support detoxification.

4. Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration is crucial for flushing toxins out of the body. Drinking warm water throughout the day can help improve digestion and promote detoxification.

5. Tongue Scraping: Use a tongue scraper in the morning to remove accumulated toxins from the tongue. This simple practice helps improve oral hygiene and supports overall detoxification.

6. Practice Yoga and Pranayama: Yoga asanas (postures) and pranayama (breath control) help stimulate circulation, massage internal organs, and promote the elimination of toxins. Incorporate yoga and pranayama into your daily routine.

7. Oil Pulling: Swishing a tablespoon of warm, organic sesame oil in your mouth for 10-15 minutes before brushing can help remove toxins from the mouth and improve oral health.

8. Abhyanga (Self-Massage): Daily self-massage with warm, organic sesame oil or herbal oils is an excellent way to promote lymphatic circulation, release tension, and support detoxification.

9. Panchakarma: Consider undergoing Panchakarma, an intensive Ayurvedic detoxification and rejuvenation program supervised by trained practitioners. Panchakarma includes therapies like oil massages, herbal steam baths, and specialized diets.

10. Mindfulness and Meditation: Stress can contribute to the accumulation of toxins in the body. Regular meditation and mindfulness practices help reduce stress and support emotional detoxification.

11. Ayurvedic Cleansing Teas: Incorporate detoxifying Ayurvedic herbal teas into your routine. These may include blends of herbs like ginger, fennel, coriander, and liquorice.

Additionally, Dr Vikas Verma, who is the director of Shashvat Ayurveda, Chandigarh said, "In the lead-up to a detox, food choices shift to lighter, simpler options. Through digestive tract lubrication, ghee supports the elimination of toxins from tissues. Through warm herbalised oils consumption, this phase also involves gentle internal oleation (Snehan). Among other procedures, Panchakarma includes Abhyanga, Swedana, and Virechana as primary detox methods working in synchrony to rid deeper tissues and channels of toxins, These therapies emphasize mental and emotional detoxification."

"Ayurvedic detox encourages practices such as meditation, yoga, and breathing techniques (pranayama) to relieve stress, quiet the mind, and achieve emotional stability—key components of the detoxification process. Holistically speaking, Ayurvedic detoxification merges dietary changes with herbal treatments, lifestyle alterations, and mindfulness techniques to help remove toxins from both the body and emotions. By tackling the underlying issues responsible for imbalance, Ayurvedic detoxification creates an environment in which the body may thrive and reclaim balance, resulting in total health restoration," he added.

Lastly, Dr. Naveen Arya, who is the founder and MD of Ayurveda Yogashram said, "The journey of detoxification with Ayurveda is a path to rediscovering your body's innate healing power. Ayurveda assists with toxin removal, system renewal, and harmony promotion by harmonizing the body's energies."

Talking about fasting, he said that it allows your body to redirect energy towards eliminating toxins instead of digesting heavy foods.

"Ayurveda stresses the importance of a balanced daily routine (dinacharya) and a healthy lifestyle. This includes adequate sleep, regular exercise, and a focus on mental well-being," he concluded.
