Today is observed as the eighth day of the Chaitra Navratri known as Durga Ashtami, and considered the most auspicious day for followers of Goddess Durga. 


The Chaitra Navratri which falls in March/April as per the gregorian calendar begins on the Pratipada Tithi (first day) of Chaitra Maas, Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the Moon) and ends with Rama Navami (the birth anniversary of Shri Rama).


On Navratri, various forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped throughout the nine days. On the eighth day of Navratri, which is Durga Ashtami, Goddess Mahagauri is worshiped.

On the last day of Navaratri, Navami tithi is observed but the fast is broken on the Dashami Tithi. This year, Chaitra Navratri Parana will be celebrated on April 22.


According to the legend, Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura on this day to retain peace while another legend denotes the importance of this day as Maa Durga killed a demon named Durgam. Also, it is believed that Goddess Kali led a strong battle against demons Chanda and Munda. Besides, the day is also significant as devotees pay ode to the 64 Yoginis. 


Chaitra Navratri 2021 Ashtami Tithi Timings


The Chaitra Navratri 2021 Maha Ashtami or Durga Ashtami Tithi begins at 12:01 AM on April 20 and ends at 12:43 AM on April 21.

Maa Mahagauri Puja Ritual


Devotees typically pray to Goddess Mahagauri with offerings of red dupatta and use red tilak. At the time of performing puja, the place of worship is cleaned and the idol of the Goddess is established. A picture of Maa Mahagauri can also be placed to worship the Goddess and white flowers are offered.


On this day, Kanya Puja is also performed by devotees. Those who observe Navratri fast break their fast by feeding young girls with the traditional platter made of halwa-puri and chana.
