The long-awaited Bohag Bihu is just around the corner. The 7-day harvest festival that marks the start of the Assamese New Year is widely celebrated in this northeastern state. The festival of joy and abundance, also known as Rongali Bihu, marks the beginning of the seeding season. Among the festivities are cultural festivals, folk dances, Bihu songs, and traditional foods such as Ghila Pitha, Poka Mithoi, Til Laru, and Narikolor Laru, among others. The beginning of the Hindu lunisolar calendar is observed across the country, though traditions vary slightly by state. Harvest festivals celebrated around this time of year include Baisakhi, Vishu, Puthandu, Pana Sankranti, and Poila Baisakh.

This year's Bohag Bihu celebrations begin on April 14 and will last until April 20. On this day, people greet their friends and relatives and exchange the white rectangular piece of handwoven cloth known as Gomosa or Gamucha, which usually has a red border on three sides.
