Generally, oils are used for different purposes based on cooking techniques like some oils & fats are used for salad dressings while others are used baking, roasting, grilling, frying & deep frying etc. Talking about olive oil and avocado oil, Prachi Jain, who is a Chief Clinical Nutritionist, HOD (Nutrition & Dietetics) at CK Birla Hospital (Gurugram) said that both oils are almost similar in their nutritional profiles and both are rich sources of Vit E, % antioxidants.

In addition, Mayuri Rastogi who is an Assistant professor of Nutrition and Dietetics Department at Sharda University said, "Furthermore, both avocado and olive oil contain an antioxidant called 'lutein' which possess an anti-inflammatory property and prevents blindness and vision impairment. However, when we have to choose one among two, then it deeply depends on characteristics of each oil."

Avocado Oil: The Green Elixir

Bhakti Kapoor, who is a Nutritionist, Wellness Consultant & Founder of Healthy High, Mumbai said, "Avocado oil is derived from the flesh of avocados, and it has gained immense popularity in recent years for its numerous health benefits. Here are some key advantages of using avocado oil:

  • Heart Health: Avocado oil is rich in monounsaturated fats, particularly oleic acid, which has been shown to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease.

  • High Smoke Point: Avocado oil has a higher smoke point than olive oil, making it a better choice for high-temperature cooking methods like frying and grilling. Its stability at high temperatures helps to prevent the formation of harmful compounds.

  • Nutrient Density: Avocado oil contains vitamins E and K, as well as various antioxidants that contribute to skin health, vision, and overall well-being.

  • Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Some studies suggest that avocado oil may help reduce inflammation in the body, potentially benefiting individuals with conditions like arthritis.

Olive Oil: The Mediterranean Marvel

Talking about this, Bhakti Kapoor said, "Olive oil, especially extra virgin olive oil, is a staple in Mediterranean cuisine and has been associated with various health benefits," and went on to list the following:

  • Heart-Healthy: Olive oil is abundant in monounsaturated fats, notably oleic acid, which can help reduce the risk of heart disease by improving cholesterol profiles and blood vessel function.

  • Antioxidant Rich: Extra virgin olive oil is packed with antioxidants, such as polyphenols, which combat oxidative stress and inflammation, potentially lowering the risk of chronic diseases.

  • Brain Health: Olive oil's monounsaturated fats may support brain health and cognition, potentially reducing the risk of cognitive decline as individuals age.

  • Digestive Aid: Olive oil has been linked to improved digestion and may help in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.

The Verdict: Avocado Oil Vs. Olive Oil

Both avocado oil and olive oil offer substantial health benefits and are excellent additions to a balanced diet. The choice between the two may come down to personal preference, culinary needs, and the specific health goals you have in mind.

Bhakti Kapoor said, "If you're looking for an oil with a higher smoke point for cooking at high temperatures, avocado oil is the winner. Its stability makes it an ideal choice for frying, sautéing, and grilling without compromising its nutritional value. On the other hand, if you're seeking an oil with a rich, distinctive flavor and a wide range of antioxidants, extra virgin olive oil is the way to go. It's perfect for salad dressings, drizzling over cooked dishes, and enhancing the flavor of your meals."
