Goa Governor Questions Kerala Assembly For Passing Resolution Against Uniform Civil Code

Pillai praising UCC said that Goa was the only state in India where the son and daughter are entitled to equal rights in property.

Goa Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai questioned the resolution passed by Kerala Assembly urging the Centre to refrain from implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on Wednesday. However, Pillai who is from Kerala said without taking the name of the state. The Governor made the statement during a special session of the Goa legislative assembly in the presence of President Droupadi Murmu.

On Wednesday, Pillai praising UCC said that Goa was the only state in India where the son and daughter are entitled to equal rights in property. He asked, as per PTI, “In other states, the daughter is entitled to one-third of property of her father and while two-thirds goes to male (son). Where is the gender justice?" 

He said that there is discrimination based on sex which is not allowed in the Consitution.

Further, Pillai went on to question Kerala. Without mentioning the name of the state, Pillai said that a resolution was passed recently in a legislative assembly against UCC which is their right.

However, he said that he would not mention the name since it would come as a shame since he was also from the state, 

He said, “I am not opposed to anyone expressing their opinion on that specific subject (including) any article in the Constitution, including Article 44. Can an assembly, however, approve a resolution refusing to implement it (UCC)?"

"How far is our legislature willing to go? I'm not going to mention the name," he added. The Governor emphasised that every pillar of democracy must keep its 'Laxman Rekha'.

Meanwhile, Murmu who is on a three-day visit to Goa, praised the coastal state's "common civil code" on Tuesday, calling it a source of pride for the state and a model for the country.
