The trial court was hearing an interim bail petition moved by the now-retired top former IAS official Sivasankar, who held a strong position in Vijayan's office till 2020, until he was suspended following his links with the prime accused in the gold smuggling case- Swapna Suresh.

Sivasankar had sought interim bail on the grounds of medical treatment.

However, the ED strongly opposed Sivasankar's bail petition. The ED also said that due arrangements have been kept in place for his medical needs at state-run Medical College hospital.

With the ED taking a strong position, the trial court refused interim bail to Sivasankar.

In the first week of March, a special court dealing with money-laundering cases rejected Sivasankar's bail petition.

Earlier, Sivasankar moved the Supreme Court seeking bail. However, the Supreme Court moved the petition to July and he was asked to approach the trail court. Now Sivasankar has to remain in jail till July when the apex court reconsiders his bail plea.
