A newborn baby was found dead on the street in a posh residential area Panampilly Nagar in Kochi on Friday. According to the police, the body of the baby was found by Kochi Corporation's conservancy workers wrapped in a courier cover on Friday morning.

An investigative team, spearheaded by ACP Rajkumar, is investigating the case. The police said that they had obtained CCTV footage from the crime spot. Based on the CCTV footage retrieved from the area, the police said that the baby was found on the road outside an apartment in Kochi and added that a family is being questioned in the connection. The CCTV visuals which went viral reportedly showed the baby wrapped in a cover falling to the ground.

Subsequently, the police have initiated inquiries with the residents of the apartment under scrutiny.

"As of now, it is suspected that the body was thrown from the nearby flat. However, we are looking into all angles," a senior police official told PTI.

It was a passerby who first spotted the body lying on the road.

Local residents at the scene speculated that only a thorough investigation would determine whether the baby was killed before being thrown or died upon impact. The incident occurred at an apartment block with 21 units, three of which were unoccupied.

Shortly before the incident, a security official reportedly left for breakfast around 8 AM. According to a local health worker, there were no pregnant women in the apartment block, to her knowledge, as per a report on IANS.

The local councilor informed the media that the first evidence emerged when the package was opened, revealing a cover from Amazon.

Meanwhile, health department and child welfare officials have arrived at the scene and are conducting an inquiry.
