Chennai: “What's wrong with installing a poster of Savarkar? He fought for the freedom of the country,” said Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra after holding a meet with senior police officers in Shivamogga over the clash that broke out between the supporters of Tipu Sultan and VD Savarkar. A clash broke out in Shivamogga after followers of Tipu Sultan tried to remove banners of VD Savarkar to install Tipu Sultan banners on Monday.
After the meeting, Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra said, “Nobody should take the law into their hands at any cost. What's wrong with installing a poster of Savarkar? He fought for the freedom of the country. So far, 4 people have been arrested.”
“We don't decide anything on the basis of religion. Peace must prevail, we have to maintain law and order in the state. We'll hold a thorough investigation. No such events should happen here again: Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra on Shivamogga violence.” he said.

On Monday, while the whole country was celebrating Independence Day, tension prevailed in Shivamogga after a group of Tipu Sultan's followers tried to remove Savarkar's banners to set up Tipu Sultan's poster.
In order to bring the tense moments under control, police took to lathi charge to disperse the crowd. They then imposed Section 144 in Shivamogga.

On Tuesday, the police arrested four persons identified as Nadeem, Tanveer, Charbi, and Abdul Rehman and they were charged with a case under section including an attempt to murder of IPC. However, during the arrest, the police also reportedly shot at the leg of one of the accused in defense. The injured accused is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
