Chennai: Two people died and eight others from two communities suffered injuries after a clash broke out at Hulihyder village of Koppal district. As a result, the local administration has imposed Section 144 at Koppal and surrounding districts in Karnataka till August 20 to contain the clashes that erupted over an interfaith relationship. 


According to a report in Hindustan Times, the clash broke out reportedly after a Valmiki man eloped with a Muslim woman. However, following a missing complaint from the woman’s family, the police took them to their respective parents but the woman eloped again. 


Following this, on Thursday, an altercation broke out and the two groups clashed with each other, police said.

According to the police, the deceased were identified as Venkappa (60) and Basha (22). The untoward incident took place after the two groups attacked each other with sticks and sharp weapons. 


The district SP said, Basha went to a shop and had an argument with an unidentified person from the other community. This led to tensions and a clash between the two groups.

The police are yet to register an FIR.


However, he said, the tension in the region has been contained as SP and DySPs are on the ground and a curfew has been imposed in the vicinity.


Police told HT that the two families used to create nuisance and trouble for other families in the vicinity.
