In a significant development in Karnataka sex scandal, former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna was handed over to the custody of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the 42nd Additional Chief Metropolitan and Magistrate court on Wednesday. The court's order grants the SIT custody of Revanna until June 18 in connection with a rape case.
Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, was initially placed in judicial custody until June 24. On June 10, he was transferred to Bengaluru Central Prison where he was designated undertrial number 5664. During his stay in the central prison, he was kept in the quarantine cell and provided food according to the prison menu, as per a report on IANS.
The SIT, investigating the case under FIR Number 2/2024, requested Revanna's production before the court. This request was obliged, leading to his transfer to SIT custody despite his earlier plea for a more comfortable stay being denied by the court.
The SIT has charged Prajwal Revanna under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act. He was booked under IPC Section 376(2)(N) (Repeated rape on the same woman), Section 506 (Criminal intimidation), Section 354(A)(1) (behaving in unwelcome way, explicit sexual behaviour demanding sexual favours), Section 354(B) (Use of criminal force on a woman) and Section 354(C) (Voyeurism, capturing images of a woman in a private act without her consent).
Prajwal Revanna has been booked in three cases of sexual assault, including charges of rape.
The allegations surfaced after pen-drives containing explicit videos purportedly involving Prajwal Revanna were circulated in Hassan ahead of the Lok Sabha polls on April 26.
