Chennai: The heavy rains in Karnataka since September led to the death of 24 people and destroyed crops in five lakh hectares of agricultural land in the state, as per the figures released after a meet on Sunday to review the damage experienced by the state due to the incessant rains.
According to a report on IANS, the Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai held a meet with Krishna to review the damages. After the meet, the state said that 658 houses were completely damaged while 8,495 houses were partially damaged. Overall 191 livestock lost lives in the rain fury.
Karnataka also reportedly assessed the damages to the crops and found that 5 lakh hectares of agricultural crops were lost and roads running up to 2,203 kilometers were also damaged in the rains. The state also witnessed damages to 165 buildings, 1,225 school buildings and 39 public health centers in the state due to the rain.
Talking to ANI, Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai said that he has sought an immediate report to disperse the compensation and has already released Rs 130 crore for previous crop damage. He said that assistance of Rs 1 lakh will be provided for house collapse while Rs 500 crore will be given for damages to roads and bridges.

The district commissioner has been allocated a total of Rs 689 crore under National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF) and the Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai assured that more money will be allocated to rectify the rain damages.
The state government earlier released Rs 130 crore to the farmers of 3.43 lakh hectares of land affected in the rains in August and September.
Meanwhile, IMD predicted heavy rains for coastal and southern Karnataka on Sunday and predicted that the rain intensity will reduce from Monday.
