Former Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai questioned CM Siddaramaiah over his silence on the Haveri moral policing and alleged gang rape case. Stating that CM 'claimed' he was a champion of minorities, Bommai alleged that the government did not even come forward to protect a woman from a minority community.
Addressing the reporters in Bengaluru on Friday, Siddaramaiah said, "The government was treading the path of dual policy in giving protection to the victim who belongs to the minority community."
Further, the senior BJP leader expressed his concern over handling of a case where a woman initially reported a gang rape but faced reluctance from the police, who initially ruled out the offense. He highlighted that the woman now openly declared she was raped making the case more serious.
"The victim must undergo the medical test afresh. The CM claims that he is the champion of minorities but a woman belonging to the minority community has been sexually assaulted. The government did not even come forward to provide her protection," the senior BJP leader said, as per a report on IANS.
The former chief minister went on to assert that there has been a 30% surge in crime incidents over the last nine months and called for a separate investigation into the Haveri incident. He proposed the formation of a dedicated investigation team to thoroughly examine the matter.
On January 8, a group of men entered a hotel room used by an interfaith couple and proceeded to assault the couple. They also subsequently forcibly removed the woman from the hotel in Hangal town. Later, the woman alleged that she was raped by the men. Following this, police have arrested three men in connection with the incident.
