Congress Will Raise Hijab Issue In Assembly, Says Former Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah

The issue is sub judice in the court of law so once a decision is taken in the court Congress would raise the issue in the Assembly, he said.

Chennai: Karnataka Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah alleged that the government is aiming to deprive Muslim girls of education using the 'Hijab' row. The Congress leader was responding to the denial of female students wearing 'Hijab' into Bhandarkas' College in Kundapura of Karnataka. 

According to a report on ANI, Siddaramaiah said, the BJP is aiming to deprive Muslim female students of education using the ‘Hijab’ controversy.

Further, the Congress leader on Hindu students wearing saffron shawls said, the saffron shawl has been in practice for a few days but Hijab has been the culture of the Muslims for several years.

He said, the issue is sub judice in court of law. Once a decision is taken in the court Congress would raise the issue in the Assembly, he added.

On January 25, Karnataka Education Department directed a committee to form guidelines for Pre-University College uniforms across the state and told colleges to maintain a status-quo until the guidelines are formed.

However, the controversy started after Muslim students wearing hijab for educational institutions were denied entry into their college in Karnataka. The issue continued with students of a pre-university college being denied entry for the third day straight in Udupi region on Friday. Three more new colleges also started to deny entry from Friday.

However, the Karnataka Education Minister BC Nagesh said, the colleges will strictly follow the education department's circular on uniforms.
