No decision yet to change names of BHU, AMU: Centre
New Delhi [India], Oct. 9 (ANI): Union Human Resource & Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday said the government has not taken any decision to drop the words "Hindu" and "Muslim" from the name of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) respectively.
Javadekar told ANI that they will look into the recommendation made by the University Grants Commission (UGC) panel.
"We have not taken any decision on this issue," Javadekar said.
"The panel was formed for academic, administrative and research audit purpose, what is there recommendation in this we will look in to the matter," he said.
Javadekar's reaction came after the UGC panel earlier in the day recommended that 'Hindu' and 'Muslim' in names of the universities should be dropped, citing they do not reflect their secular character.
The recommendation is stated in the audit report of the panel formed to probe irregularities in 10 central universities. (ANI)
