New Delhi [India], Dec 28 (ANI): Industry body FICCI has welcomed the central government's move to provide subsidies to 11 cities under FAME India (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid) and Electric Vehicles).

The announcement of providing subsidy for launching electric buses, taxis and three-wheelers was made by the Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Anant Geete, recently.

Appreciating the government's effort to promote electric mobility in the country, Shekar Viswanathan, Chairman, FICCI Taskforce on Electric Vehicle and Vice Chairman and Whole Time Director, Toyota Kirloskar Motors said that this step will catalyse the faster adoption of electric vehicles in the country.

"This is a major step forward by the Government and focus on public transportation (buses, taxis, autos) will enhance cleaner public transportation and help create awareness about electric vehicles amongst operators, consumers of public transportation and general public at large," said Viswanathan.

Viswanathan further emphasised that the support of the government to hybrids is an important indication of a pragmatic technology-neutral approach that will help in faster adoption of a full range of electric vehicle technologies (xEVs) and their manufacturing in India.

"This is critical for reducing fossil fuel imports and lowering pollution," he added.(ANI)
