Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) [India], December 17 (ANI): A woman from Argentina has allegedly been manhandled and robbed by three youth at Varanasi's Assi Ghat on Saturday evening.

The victim, who works for an NGO, was robbed of Rs 2,000 and beaten too when she was meditating at the bank of River Ganga on Saturday evening.

"When I was in a state of meditation, I felt the presence of some people around me. When I opened my eyes, I saw three youth and one of them was searching my purse. They slapped me when I opposed them, and took away Rs. 2000," the victim told ANI.

Police have registered a case under section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and begun their investigation into the matter.

This is not the first instance of tourist assault in the state.

Earlier in the month, a Japanese tourist was drugged and robbed in Varanasi. The robbers took away his visa, passport, 50,000 Japanese yen, Rs. 2,000 and ATM cards. (ANI)
