Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], August 17 (ANI): The residents putting up close to the Musi river in Hyderabad have started complaining of foul smell and pollution, due to the spillage of sewage waste and chemical mixture in the area.

This comes close on the heels of the Bellandur Lake in Bengaluru starting spilling toxic foam, on Thursday, yet again.

Speaking to ANI, a resident said, "I used to drink water directly from this river when I was a child, but now I can't even stand in its premises due to the stench."

Also speaking on the matter, Environmentalist Purushotam Reddy said that the last few decades have caused the destruction of the "beautiful" River Musi.

He further said, "Whichever party came to power never gave attention to the environment and as a result river Musi stood neglected."

The environmentalist also said that the River has been subjected to all kinds of encroachments.

"All kinds of private encroachments are being done. They are now using encroached land for parking and mechanic shops. The whole thing is illegal," Reddy said.

Speaking to ANI, the Incharge of the area, Satya Narayana said, "A lot needs to be done. People throw all sort of waste into the river. The sewage water is mixed in it and this is the main reason why the river is spoilt."

Narayan further said that to fix this, the people and officials also need to work together.

"There are animal carcasses in the river which flow along with industrial waste," he added.

A cleaner named Ghansham said, "We are not given proper payments and we get into the water to clean. When we ask neighbours for drinking water, they shun us away like we are beggars. This is not correct." (ANI)
