New Delhi: The emergence of OTT platforms has changed things drastically for the entertainment industry. Besides coming as a boon during the pandemic when cinemas remained closed for long durations at a stretch, the OTT boom has resulted in a paradigm shift in terms of content conceptualisation and creation.
The actor, not the traditional hero, is now the star. You don’t really need a stellar star cast any more to sell your content, and even stars are not averse to OTT now as they were known to be to television in the past.
Also, OTT platforms have suddenly opened opportunities and prolonged the industry life for a lot of silver-screen actors who were past their prime and would have waved a goodbye by now.
Another change that has come in the entertainment scene in recent years is the rise of regional cinema, especially the southern cinema. The southers states, be it Kerala, Tamil Nadu or Andhra-Telangana, are not only making good cinema but also giving Bollywood a run for its money. The South films now have takers across India, and the following of the stars stretches beyond their own states.
What does this mean for Bollywood and what are the lessons this has for the massive Hindi film industry?
To deliberate on these new rules of the game, and the OTT boom, ABP Network’s ‘Wildstone presents Ideas of India’ Summit is bringing two big names from the industry who will share their views and vision on Saturday, March 26 at the Mumbai event.
Filmmaker Karan Johar will be in conversation with film critic, journalist and author Mayank Shekhar, who will chair the session titled ‘The Rise of the South: Lessons for Bollywood’ starting at 3.30 pm Saturday.
