According to the Union Health Ministry data, the total number of Coroanavirus cases in India climbed to 10,558,710 on Sunday with 15,144 fresh infections while recoveries surged to 10,196,885.

According to data from Worldometer, India is currently the second-most-affected nation globally, and ranks 13th among worst-wit nations by active cases.

The Health Ministry said the drop in the number of states carrying out vaccination today was part of a usual strategy to avoid clashes with immunisation schedules for other illnesses.

"The usual strategy is to avoid days on which there is a holiday or there is routine immunisation for other diseases. Most states are doing it on four days but smaller states like Goa are doing it on two days of the week because they have lesser numbers," Manohar Agnani, the Joint Secretary of the Health Ministry, said.

Nationwide vaccination campaign started on Saturday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Manish Kumar, a worker at the hospital, was given the first shot of Covid-19 vaccine in presence of Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan. With this, Manish became the first person to get vaccinated in the country's capital.
