Mumbai: A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting with Chief Ministers of several states and union territories (UTs) to discuss the concerning issue of a sudden rise in daily Coronavirus cases, Maharashtra on Thursday recorded 25,833 new coronavirus cases, making it the highest single-day surge ever since Covid-19 pandemic broke out in the country in March last year.


The surge in Coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours took Maharashtra's overall caseload to 23,96,340 with 58 fatalities, taking a total death toll to 53,138. 



Before this, the highest single-day surge in Maharashtra was recorded at 24,886 cases on September 11 last year. Meanwhile, the fatalities in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region have surpassed the 20,000 mark to reach 20,009 with 14 deaths in the past 24 hours - making it the worst-hit in the country.


As per the data shared by Health Ministry, the burden of cases and fatalities is heavy in Mumbai, Nashik, and Nagpur circles, with Aurangabad and Latur circles also recording increasing figures in recent weeks.


In terms of recoveries, 12,764 patients were discharged from hospitals on Thursday, the highest in one-day this year with overall recovery standing at 21,75,565. The data also reveals that there are 1,66,353 active cases in the state.

Nagpur city on the second consecutive day recorded the highest number of new COVID-19 cases at 2,926, followed by 2,877 in Mumbai and 2,791 in Pune city. Pune division comprising civic bodies of Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad as well as districts of Pune, Solapur, and Satara reported cumulative 5,583 new cases, the highest among the divisions.


With the significant surge in daily Coronavirus cases even in Mumbai, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started reopening its shut Covid-19 centers and hospitals in anticipation of the fresh surge. 


Official data also stated that country's two worst-affected regions continue to be Mumbai Circle and Pune Circle with the highest number of cases and fatalities.
