Mumbai

Mumbai on Thursday reported 42 new COVID-19 cases, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said in a release. The city reported zero new pandemic-related fatalities for the fourth day in a row.

The city's caseload rose to 10,57,995, while the death toll remained unchanged at 19,559.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday said no fine will be imposed for not wearing face masks in public places from April 1, 2022.

The civic body, however, appealed people to use the mask voluntarily as the pandemic is not completely over.

In the last two years, the civic body had deployed its clean-up marshals in public places for effective enforcement of the mask mandate. "At present, as the infection and spread of coronavirus is under control, the restrictions imposed due to Coronavirus infection are being relaxed. Hence, if a citizen does not wear a mask in the Greater Mumbai area, the penalty of Rs. 200 won't be charged," the BMC release stated. Notably, the Maharashtra government earlier in the day said the mask mandate will be withdrawn from April 2.

Delhi

Delhi reported 113 fresh COVID-19 cases with a positivity rate of 0.49 per cent and zero death due to the viral disease on Thursday, according to data shared by the city health department.

With these fresh cases, the national capital's tally of cases has increased to 18,64,970. The death toll stands at 26,152, it stated.

As many as 23,094 COVID-19 tests were conducted the previous day, the department said in its latest bulletin.

Delhi has decided to do away with the mandatory wearing of face masks at public places from today.

At a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) chaired by Lt Governor Anil Baijal, it was decided that there will be no fine for not wearing face masks at public places in the national capital, officials said on Thursday.

They added that the DDMA, however, is likely to issue an advisory for people, asking them to use masks at crowded places. Currently, there is a fine of Rs 500 for not wearing masks at public places in Delhi.

The withdrawal of the COVID-19 curbs came almost two years after the pandemic struck in March 2020. It is expected that some other states may follow suit in the coming days.
