Kolkata, Jan 9 (PTI) West Bengal on Sunday reported an all-time high of 24,287 fresh cases of Covid-19 on Sunday, the highest since the first wave of infections in 2020.
The infections detected in the last 24 hours, were 5,485 more than yesterday's, taking the tally to 17,55,046, the health department said. Kolkata city accounted for more than a third of Bengal's Covid infections for the day with a tally of 8,712 cases, compared to 7,337 cases on Saturday. While neighbouring North 24 Parganas with several of Kolkata's sattelite towns including Salt Lake and its infotech and commercial hub accounting for 5,053 cases against the previous day's 3,286 cases.
Other districts reporting large number of infections during the day included the industrial districts of Howrah (1,742) and Hooghly (1,276), near Kolkata.
There were 18 Covid-19 related deaths registered here which pushed the toll to 19,901, it added. Since Saturday, 8,213 recoveries were reported in Bengal, though the discharge rate further slipped to 94.42 per cent. The number of active cases, however, increased by another 16,056 to 78,111.
In the last 24 hours, 71,664 samples have been tested in Bengal taking the total number of such clinical examinations to 2,18,74,205, the bulletin stated.

A probe has been ordered against a private laboratory after a number of flyers who reached here from Italy recently tested positive for COVID-19 amid allegations by several of them that their test reports were incorrect, health officials said on Sunday.
The Airports Authority of India has also replaced the services of the Delhi-based laboratory with a local lab, officials said.
The probe had been ordered after several of the passengers who returned from Italy had alleged that their Covid positive report was not correct as they had tested negative hours before boarding the flight. They had raised questions on the testing practice adopted by the lab. Many among them had even created ruckus at the international airport here.
Some of the passengers who had arrived here at Shri Guru Ramdas International Airport had subsequently tested negative in a re-test later, officials said.

Fifteen people in the Jharkhand chief minister's residence here, including Hemant Soren's wife and his two children have tested positive for coronavirus on Saturday.
Ranchi chief medical officer Vinod Kumar said that 62 people were tested at the chief minister's residence on Saturday morning.
Reports of 24 of them were available this evening and it was found that Chief Minister Hemant Soren's wife Kalpana Soren, their two sons Nitin and Vishwajit, sister-in-law Sarla Murmu and a bodyguard were among the 15 affected.
Soren himself, his media adviser Abhishek Prasad and assistant Sunil Srivastava have, however, tested negative.
Kumar said that all the affected in the chief minister's residence have mild symptoms of corona and they can be only treated in home isolation.
The state reported 5081 new COVID-19 cases and three fatalities on Saturday. Of the new cases 1731 were reported from capital Ranchi and 1043 from Jamshedpur. The caseload has increased to 21098 and the toll to 5164, a health department bulletin said.

Fresh Covid-19 cases breached the grim 10,000 mark in Tamil Nadu as it added 10,978 infections, pushing the caseload to 27,87,391, while the toll mounted to 36,843 with 10 more fatalities, the health department said on Saturday.
The department said 1,525 people recovered from the disease and were discharged in the last 24 hours, aggregating to 27,10,288 leaving 40,260 active infections.
After recording nil Omicron cases over the past few days, 64 new cases were detected in the last 24 hours, aggregating to 185 till date, a medical bulletin said.
The last time when Tamil Nadu reported over 10,000 cases was in April 18, 2021 when it added 10,723 new cases.
Nearly half of the new Covid-19 cases reported today were contributed by Chennai with 5,098 infections, followed by Chengalpet 1,332.
As many as 14 districts reported new cases in triple digits, while Ariyalur recorded the least with four infections.

With 18,802 fresh cases of Covid-19 reported in West Bengal on Saturday, the state sank deeper into a coronavirus crisis, as capital Kolkata clocked a cumulative weekly positivity rate of over 55 percent ending Friday, government officials said.
The overall tally, since the pandemic erupted, has gone up to 17,30,759.
The state's positivity rate also rose from Friday's 26.34 per cent to 29.60 per cent, portending a grim battle against the disease ahead, with the Gangasagar fair, a huge congregation of common people and seers having begun yesterday.
Seven more fatalities were recorded in Delhi on Saturday due to COVID-19 as the city clocked 20,181 infections in a single day, while the positivity rate rose to 19.60 per cent, with Health Minister Satyendar Jain saying the fatalities have been reported among those with comorbidities and the elderly.
The national capital has been seeing an uptick of daily cases in the last few days, mainly triggered by the Omicron variant of the infection.
According to data shared by the health department, 1,586 people are admitted in hospitals, accounting for 11.24 per cent of 14,106 dedicated Covid beds.
Registration for the 'precaution dose' of COVID-19 vaccine for healthcare workers, frontline workers and those aged 60 and above with co-morbidities started on the CoWIN portal on Saturday evening.
The exercise of administering the precaution dose to these category of beneficiaries will begin from Jan 10.

There is no need for new registration of those taking the precautionary dose and they can directly take an appointment from Saturday or walk-in, the Union Health Ministry had said.
All people aged 60 years and above with co-morbidities will not be required to produce or submit any certificate from their doctor at the time of administration of the precaution dose, the Centre informed states and UTs recently.

Coronavirus HIGHLIGHTS, January 9, 2021: Maharashtra on Saturday reported 133 new infections of the Omicron variant of coronavirus which took the total of such cases in the state to 1,009, health officials said.
As many as 439 patients have been discharged after recovery in the state to date. Of 133 new cases, reports of 130 infections were received from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, while three reports were received from labs in Gujarat, officials said.
Of new cases of the Omicron variant, 118 were reported from Pune city, eight from neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad, three from Pune rural, two from Vasai-Virar and one each from Ahmednagar and Mumbai.
Mumbai has reported the highest 566 Omicron cases in the state so far, followed by 201 in Pune city.
Bihar reported 4526 fresh coronavirus cases on Saturday, 1478 more than the previous day, pushing the number of active cases to 12,311 and the tally to 7,40,377, the state health department said.
With the surge, the RJD, which is the main opposition party in Bihar on Saturday closed its office in the state capital for an indefinite period.
A bulletin by the state health department said no fresh death due to the disease was reported in the last 24 hours and the cumulative toll in the infection stood at 12,100.
A total 71,5966 people have recovered from the disease so far, including 704 in the last 24 hours.
Five districts of the state accounted for the majority of the new cases, the bulletin said.
Patna alone registered 1,956 fresh cases on Saturday. On Thursday and Friday, the city had registered 1,407 and 1314 cases respectively. The number of active cases now stands at 7072 in Patna, the bulletin said.
