Background

Coronavirus HIGHLIGHTS: India is undergoing a massive surge in the number of Covid-19 cases since the dawn of the new year. New Delhi, Mumbai, and other cities have become the epicenters of Covid-19, but, apart from the cities, even J&K is facing ten times more Covid cases in the state. 


India reported 7,743 Omicron positive cases in the last 24 hours, which is 28.17 percent higher than Saturday, according to Press Information Bureau. The fresh covid-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours is 2,71,202 which is 2,369 cases higher than yesterday. 


Although the cases in the country were following an upward trail, the fatality of the cases in this Covid-19 surge is something that is being discussed. More than 80% of beds are available in Delhi's hospitals despite the massive surge in cases.


With the administration of more than 66 lakh Doses (66,21,395) vaccine doses in the last 24 hours, India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage has exceeded 156.76 Cr (1,56,76,15,454) as per provisional reports till 7 am on Sunday.


Delhi on Sunday reported 18,286 COVID-19 cases and 28 deaths, while the positivity rate dropped to 27.87 percent from 30.64 percent a day ago, according to health department data.


The state also reported 125 new cases of the Omicron variant of Coronavirus, raising the overall count to 1,730.


India, on January 16 completed a year of administering Covid-19 vaccines to its citizens. India has registered 156 crore vaccine doses so far.
